Masterclass

The Call for Abstracts has been extended to the 10th of October. Submit abstracts here: bit.ly/JLCFAbstracts2023

For more information on the Call for Abstracts, please visit Call for Abstracts OPEN – Joep Lange Chairs project (aighd.org)

The Masterclasses will be held on the 7th and 9th of November from 14:00-17:00 via Zoom.

This year, our theme is ‘Predicting the Futures of Global Health’. Big data and rapid developments in data analysis methods and tools allow us to approach Global Health issues in novel ways. Mathematical modeling, digital imaging, and artificial intelligence strategies are used in many fields of Global Health and Development, such as the emergence and spread of infectious diseases, implementation of digital tools in health systems, and the impact of climate change. These strategies come with novel questions related to ‘the ethics of predicting’, accounting for the social and behavioral dimensions, and the validity of forecasting. In this year’s Joep Lange Chairs and Fellows Symposium, experts will speak about these novel questions and how to address them.

Our Masters are here!

We are proud to introduce our four masters: Professor Colin Russell, Professor Menno Pradhan, Dr. Catherine Kyobutungi, and Professor Mahsa Shabani.

Prof. Colin Russell works at the Amsterdam University Medical Center as the head of the Virus Evolution Team where they study the unique evolutionary paths of viruses. Their research employs a range of computational techniques such as modeling protein structures, molecular phylogenetics, statistical models for quantifying pathogen phenotypes, and mathematical models for broad data synthesis.

Prof. Menno Pradhan is a Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam as part of the School of Business and Economics. Pradhan has extensive experience working at the World Bank and the Vrije Universiteit, University of Amsterdam, Cornell University, and with us at AIGHD. Most of his research covers basic education, early childhood development, community empowerment, and health.

Dr. Catherine Kyobutungi is currently the Executive Director at the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), the Co-Director for the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA), and was elected as a fellow to the African Academy of Sciences. As a Joep Lange chair, she is studying the management and prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), in particular CVD, learning from the long-term experiences of HIV management in Africa. She holds a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Heidelberg and an MSc in Community Health and Health Management.

Prof. Mahsa Shabani is an Associate Professor in Health Privacy Law and Innovation. She is currently a co-Principal Investigator for PROPHET (Horizon Europe), Crowd-scourced genetic data for research purposes (FWO), Fairness in secondary uses of health data (BOF), and Smart glasses in primary care (TETRA). Her research focus is on personal data protection, health privacy, data sharing, and data-driven biomedical research ethics, law and policy with broad readership in the fields of data protection, medical law, bioethics, genomics and bioinformatics.

Our highly anticipated Joep Lange Chair and Fellows Symposium will be held on the 31st of October 2023. With the theme ‘Predicting the Futures of Global Health’, the 2023 edition of the symposium is expected to be our most compelling yet. Four renowned speakers will discuss topics intersecting law, health, mathematical modelling, big data, and climate. Curious? Learn more here: JLCF 2023 – Joep Lange Chairs project (aighd.org).
